Yes, gallery wrap is fine with both Tobi and I who are the Co-chairs who have the final say. The gallery is fine also.  Just be sure to have D-rings and wire so your works are ready for hanging.

    See you in June!  Deb

Thanks for the info, and look forward to painting with you all.  I plan to check most of my things in a suitcase and go with the open acrylics.

As for the canvas Deb-- the prospectus says all works must be sturdily framed.  Do you think gallery wrapped, painted edges can pass as framed? It is indeed sturdy and presentable, and how my other galleries accept my work but I'm wondering if I need to check with InArt to see if that's fine? Or are you the coordinator with the final say?

I'm also an acrylic painter who has never painted in New Mexico. Last season I did buy a wet palette with a sponge and used it to paint the beach in southern SC in August. It helped a lot keeping the paint moist from below. I also use an umbrella to try to prevent the direct sun from drying it out. I guess I'll find out if this also works in NM.

Welcome to New Mexico and the challenge of working with acrylics. I am an acrylic painter and use various techniques to help with the dryness. First I use a Masterson Palette with a two sponges that I keep very moist. This helps some. I also place my closed palette in a large plastic bag so I can make sure I seal in as much moisture as possible ( I use an old pottery clay bag). I also work very early and in the late afternoon, use an umbrella or make sure my palette is in the shade. Next, use a spray bottle to help with drying and also sometimes I break down and get Golden Open acrylics...especially white..this all helps, but it is still a challenge. Feel free to contact me, maybe we could paint together some.

    Hope this helps

    Brooke,

Hi, Dee Sanchez here. Welcome and hope you have a great time in Santa Fe!

Our climate is really dry and I did not have great luck with acrylics. They dry out fast in the heat and sun. Not saying it can't be done, it's just harder.

Some people have recommended Cobra water soluble oils - they are easy to work with, don't dry out as fast and can be cleaned with soap and water.

    Hope this helps,

    Dee

So glad you are excited and coming to the SFPAF.  I don't know which artists might be working in acrylics, so  I hope someone will offer a response.

Please review the Prospectus for your question regarding the size limitations for the works you submit for judging and hanging in the gallery.  You can also sign into the PAPNM website and view the works from 2015 under Past Exhibitions I believe.

The gallery edge wrapped paintings have never been submitted to date and since it was not an exclusion noted in the Prospectus, you are welcome to submit your works that way.

There is a local art store, Artisan, which has a decent selection, but the prices are retail prices.  I might suggest you send your supplies ahead of time to where you will be staying so you are guaranteed you have what you need and won't need to make any compromises.

I hope this helps!  See you in June,  Deb Stup, SFPAF Co-chair

Hello everybody.  I'll be coming from Seattle Washington to participate in my second juried festival!  (my first one was in Hood River OR). I'm pretty new to this and was hoping to get some more info on what to expect-- how big do people paint for this event? Is there a recommended art supply store? Im planning on buying most of my supplies there. Does anyone else use acrylics in such a dry climate? I tend to work on gallery edge wrapped canvas and paint the sides-- are frames necessary for the final display?  I'm looking forward to meeting other painters and depicting a starkly different landscape than from where I live!
