Where the WIld Things Are, oil on linen, 20x24, Private Collection

"I believe that art is the act of creation. The result, whether it is a painting, sculpture, photograph etc., is simply a record of the creation experience. My approach is to free myself from preconceived visual beliefs and interpret the world directly before me. In so doing, I rediscover the colors, textures and values of everyday life that we otherwise take for granted. This is what drives me to paint and what I encourage in my students.

My art is the product of diligence in practice. I do not believe in talent. I believe that all of us have the potential to create art, if we choose to dedicate ourselves to the pursuit."

Jurors of Entry:

Brienne M. Brown, Marshland Light, Watercolor on paper, 18x24

Brienne’s passion is watercolor and plein air painting.  She has won several top awards in many plein air competitions.  “I find beauty in everyday life, the so called ‘mundane’.  Ordinary people going about their everyday lives inspire me.  I especially enjoy painting en plein air, where each painting reminds me of where I was, of the experiences I had, the sounds, smells, and the people I met. "

Desmond O'Hagan

Mr. O’Hagan is a Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America, and is listed in Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in America, and in the Hall of Fame at the Art Institute of Colorado.

In May 2005, he was inducted into the International Association of Pastel Societies' "Master Circle". In 2018, he was awarded Eminent Pastelist status by IAPS.

Desmond O'Hagan, Rio Grande Gorge, NM, 40"x60", oil.

"All art is a form of story-telling, and mine tells the story of interpreting light – a constant element in my paintings. Whether it is the subtle colors of dusk, or a simple stream of light in a dimly lit interior, all these effects motivate me to capture the image on canvas of paper. Throughout the years, I've worked in watercolor, acrylics, charcoal, pen & ink, and monotypes, but my primary focus is oils and pastels. With oils, I enjoy the expressive brush strokes and the way paint can be manipulated on canvas or paper. With pastels, I love the texture, the explosive color, and the bold strokes I can achieve."
